Probably one of the most well know and popular activities in Scouting. The Pinewood Derby.
The first derby was held at the Scout House in Manhattan Beach, California on May 15th 1953. Since then it has inspired and encouraged scouts of all ages to build and race their own cars (with adult supervision).
The heat is on.
When racing, the cars are placed on a purpose built guided track. With each car locked into its own lane, gravity is the name of the game. With up to 8 lanes racing, races are conducted in heats, giving each car the chance to run in every lane.
The Winners Circle
While not every racer wins, each scout receives a patch for the race along with a ribbon and the pride in the achievement of building and racing their car. Top performers at the race can take home a trophy for their accomplishment, with special awards available for car design and styling Pinewood Derby is an outlet for competition, creativity and teamwork.
While Pinewood Derby's are reserved for members of the BSA, several other organizations hold their own version, often directed by former scouts and using skills learned in the BSA to create magnificent works that are fast, creative and engaging for youth and adults.
